Pressure Monitor Holter
cardiac question?? my blood pressure has been very low for the past year at least?
I have gone to the doctor and been told oh just eat salt eat salt….i have tried to add more idolized salt to my diet. It really hasn’t solved the problem. My blood pressure has been as low as 77/38. That has happened both times and been recorded by nurses at a hospital. The doctor I saw was not concerned. Recently I started taking meds for low thryoid. The thryoid was borderline low. I was also having heart palpitations so I had a holter monitor on me and it was regular synus rhythm but then 72 beats a minute but then in my sleep it dropped suddenly to 44 beats a minute. That was before the thyroid med. I still don’t feel all that well although I think the med has helped. I tried to go for a brisk walk the other day and I felt started to feel dizzy on exertion. I am 42. I bugs me that these doctors are like your fine your fine. when clearly it turns out to not be fine.
There is no real definition of ‘low’ blood pressure. The question is whether or not your blood pressure is associated with symptoms. If there are no symptoms then your reading is normal for you. If there are symptoms then the diagnosis is hypotension. Sometimes this is related to posture – postural hypotension – and other times it is not. When it is not related to posture and when you have symptoms you require treatment to avoid syncope or ‘fainting’. The various treatments are increased salt intake, the oral decongestant pseudoephedrine, and the prescription drug midodrine. Your Holter monitor is normal based upon what little you have told me. Most everyone’s heart rate during sleep drops into the 40s. If you do not feel well in general and if you feel ‘dizzy’ upon exertion then you do require further evaluation and treatment. There are some individuals whose problem is increased vagal tone which is detected by something called the ’tilt test’. It is not possible in this forum to diagnose people only to advise them. If your physician is not going to complete your evaluation, determine the diagnosis, and define the treatment then you should seek a second opinion.
