Speed Handpiece Latch
Midwest Tradition or Star 430K?
If you were choosing a high speed handpiece between these two, which one would you choose?
I am NOT looking for fiber optic or swivel connections.
I’d prefer a traditional chuck with a bur tool and not a latch or push button chuck.
It looks like the Midwest Tradition or Star 430K are my choices.
What are your thoughts?

I’ve thought about this, but it would be about a $10K investment to get enough handpieces up and running. I have always had at least a dozen “active” high speeds in the office with 4-6 on standby as spares that help me get through the repair cycles. With either brand I mentioned, I can get a dozen for about $4,500 right now.
I won’t rule OUT the electric, though, as everyone seems to like them. The A-dec would fit in a slot on my A-dec units…
I have used the Midwest Tradition with the traditional chuck and bur tool, the Star 430K push button chuck, the Kavo push button and the Viper (High Torque) push button.
My personal preferences are the Star 430K and the Viper with a slight lean towards the Star 430K because I find it requires less repair compared to the other handpieces. I know that a lot of dentists especially here in New York use the Kavo’s and it seems like the Kavo is always used as a benchmark by the dental reps at least in the northeast. The dental reps state that the torque speed on the Kavo is the fastest and most consistent but I don’t find that to be true. In fact if you want a drill that cuts fast, I would say the Viper handpiece cuts the fastest.
Star 430K doesn’t cut the fastest but it is my most reliable handpiece and requires the least amount of repair. It is a compromise but my Star 430K is my workhorse drill and it has served me well.
